Luke's first birthday was marked by the 3rd worst blizzard in Chicago history. A skeptical Kurt did end up working from home - so it was our first Wiese family snow day. Snow totals in our area of the city were recorded at approximately 18 inches. I can remember storms with more snow, but never have I experienced such high winds or lightning and thunder during a snow storm. Just as predicted, the snow stopped around noon on Wednesday and by 2 pm the sun was out. When the kids were up from their naps, we ventured outside to begin digging out -
Kate bundled up to help shovel. Notice the hydrant covered in the background.
Kate's shovel was no match for this snow.
Luke propped on a snow pile.
Snow banks taller than Luke.
Taller than Kate!
Luke's first sled ride
He liked it!
This is the view looking South at the Corner of Lakewood and Wellington. Snow is piled as high as the Stop signs and the roads are more like the width of a one way street. My pictures don't really do it justice - I am going to take some of the alley too so the non-city dwelling folks can get a sense of what we're dealing with. It is going to be a while before it is easy to get around in downtown Chicago. This is certainly a first birthday we will not soon forget!
