Siblings

February 3, 2010

Not to be totally sappy and sentimental, but lately I spend a lot of time thinking about Kate and Luke's relationship.  Watching it.  Refereeing it.  Being amazed by it.  While I know the events of the next few weeks will forever change their relationship, I hope that another sibling will only add to their love for one another.  Luke does not know life without Kate and I doubt Kate remembers life before Luke.  Kate is a typical oldest girl.  She can be very nurturing towards Luke, but also quite bossy.  She will mimic my phrases and directions to him like another mother.  She will try and teach him something, but she also knows exactly how to antagonize him and to upset him when he is completely content.  She loves reading to him but gets frustrated when he won't sit still and listen.  She can be a total tattle tale on him, but other times she is watching out for him like a hawk.  She loves making him happy.  He wants to be just like her and do everything she does.  He's taken to kissing her goodnight, every night, even when she is adamant she does not want a kiss.  Generally our first exchange in the morning as we walk past Kate's room and head down stairs is, "Kate night nights." Luke is taking inventory of where everyone is and raises his fingers to his lips to let me know he knows to be quiet and let her sleep.  He is thrilled when she does wake up!

I am 33 months older than my brother (compared to their 27) but I have no recollection of our relationship at Kate and Luke's ages.  Obviously our relationship has grown and changed countless times in the last 30 years as I'm sure Kate and Luke's will as well.  My husband also has just one older sister who is roughly 3 years older than he is.  No discredit to our own sibling relationships, but we seemed to always agree that in terms of kids we hoped we'd have "more than two".  What this will do for the overall family dynamic (other than instill more chaos for the foreseeable future) is yet to be determined.  For now, it is fun to observe and to try and capture some of the funnier, happier, sillier moments between these two.  And then to think about how things will be once there are three!

Some of my favorite sibling pictures from the past 21 months . . .

Last Thursday - October 27, 2011.
We had a little sibling photo shoot and reading session.

 Rocking the glider super fast!

Kate reading Luke his favorite book, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do you Hear?"

Kate reading Luke a counting book - she agreed it is time he starts counting.  I love his enthusiasm and pride as he signs "milk" when she gets to the page with the cow.

  1. Those pictures are precious. Thinking of you in the final days before you become a family of five!
